Navigating Pumping During the Holidays
The holidays, however, can provide some situations that we are not accustomed to though. If you are an exclusive nursing mother, you might find that the holidays is when you are presented with the need to pump. If you are an exclusive pumper, you may find yourself packing an entire suitcase of supplies in order to conveniently pump while away from home. So I wanted to provide some tips for pumping during the holidays.
How to Prepare for Breastfeeding Success this Holiday Season
There are several times in our breastfeeding journey, which we anticipate change is on the horizon. However, sometimes there are hazards in our path, which come with no warning, no caution sign, no cones alerting us that there is a problem ahead. I feel like this is what the holidays can bring to our breastfeeding journey. This often is a roadblock, which has no detour sign, no alert.
So today, I will be your ALERT sign, let you know that there is potential for pot holes up ahead.
“If He Can Eat Turkey, then…”
Ah, I can picture it now. You are having a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. Your child actually eats their meal. You actually had a meal in peace. Pump-Tober: Primary, Secondary & Wearables - Oh My!
Nothing that makes me roll my eyes quite like scrolling Instagram and seeing the latest and greatest wearable pump being advertised by some “mother”, who supposedly can Olympic lift, try out for the Russian ballet, and take a nap while pumping 8oz of breastmilk in a 20 minute session.

Estrogen: Milk’s Enemy
Sadly, we have to wrap this month up though with the hormone that actually hurts our milk supply. Estrogen diminishes our milk supply.
Progesterone: The Pregnancy Hormone
Progesterone is not commonly talked about, however, it still plays a role in the lactation process.
Prolactin: The Milk Maker
Prolactin is the real milk making hormone! Although other hormones, like oxytocin, are necessary in order to produce milk, prolactin is responsible for some breast tissue development and the production of milk.
Oxytocin: The Love Hormone
I think oxytocin is most talked about when referencing “how to increase my milk supply?” or “how is milk made?” However, most do not actually understand how oxytocin affects the production of human milk.

The Breastfeeding Bridesmaid
I will be a breastfeeding bridesmaid, again, this weekend supporting my soon-to-be sister-in-law.

The Breastfeeding Sports Mom
Well, there I was 8 days post C-section slowly pushing a stroller across the park. Kai might have only been a week old, but my oldest had a ballgame!
